Reverse Addition

​

 급속도로 산업화한 도시는 수직, 수평으로 무리한 물리적 확장을 해왔다. 이것은 땅 위를 채우는 행위(+) 뿐만 아니라, 비우는(-) 행위를 포함한다. 더 높은 물리적 밀도를 위해 기존의 역사,문화, 생태적 가치를 제거(-) 해온 것이다. 결국 +, - 두 행위는 모두 도시의 발전이 아닌 물리적 확장의 도구였다.

순천 또한 이러한 도시의 확장 과정을 피해갈 수 없었다. 새로운 고층주거단지 조성을 위한 신도심의 건설( 고밀도의 주거단지:+, 기존 생태환경 제거: - ), 과거 순청읍성의 철거(문화, 역사적 유물의 제거: -) 등의 확장을 거치며, 순천이 가진 땅의 정체성은 조금씩 희미해져갔다.

순천 예술광장 계획에 있어서, 땅과 도시, 인간의 진정한 상생관계를 위해, 건축의 긍정적 방향으로의 “+,-“ 행위를 어떻게 보여줄까에 대한 고민은 시작되었다. 그것은 땅과 건축의 단절에 대한 회복을 보여주어야 한다. 또한, 도시 네트워크를 활성화시키는 광장, 순천의 문화·역사적 컨텐츠의 교류가 이루어지는 미술관이 계획되어야 한다. 특히, 도시민과 방문자들의 교감과 문화 행위을 유도하며, 도시의 정체성을 담아내는 상징적 오브제로서의 역할 또한 담당해야 할 것이다.

이제 순천은 그동안 도시가 잃어버린 것과 되찾아야 할 것들을 바라보기 시작했다. 다양한 역사, 문화, 생태적 자원을 살려, 정체성을 강화하기 위한 노력들이 점차 성과를 거두고 있다. 이러한 노력의 일환이자, 또 하나의 대안으로 순천예술광장 계획안 “Reverse Addition”을 제안한다.

 

 비우기

 광장의 물리적 존재감을 가장 강력하게 드러내는 방법은 지표위를 모두 비우는 것이다. 이 거대한 비움의 공간은 구도심의 네트워크와 광장을 가장 빈번히, 효과적으로 접촉하게 할 것이다. 구도심에서 유입된 시민과 관광객들은 광장에서 소통 할 것이며, 주변 문화의 거리, 패션의 거리 등 구도심의 활성화에도 기여할 것이다. 또한 지표위를 비움으로서 넓어진 건축물간의 간격은 시민들과 원거리의 생태환경까지도 시각적으로 연결시키기도 한다. 이것은 땅이 가진 정체성을 시민과 방문객들에게 인식시켜줄 수 있다.

 이를 위해 신연자루를 제외한 광장과 요구된 프로그램을 지표하 레벨로 낮추어 배치하였다.

 

 낮아진 광장과 경계의 재배치

 기존건물을 단순히 비워냄으로 만들어지는 경계는, 광장을 기존 도심의 건물로 또다시 둘러싸이게 할 뿐이다.

 광장을 지표하의 레벨로 낮춤으로서 생기는 단면의 경계에 전시, 교육, 방문자센터 등의 새로운 프로그램을 배치했다. 광장 경계는 순천의 옛성곽을 떠올리도록 선형을 디자인했다. 성곽안의 구도심이 새로운 컨텍스트들로 둘러싸인 광장으로 재현되는 것이다.

 성벽너머 현재의 순천과 오래전부터 있어온 산, 하늘이 낮아진 광장안으로 들어온다.

 

 벽

 낮아진 광장으로 인해 생기는 지표하의 벽들은 다양한 문화행위를 묵묵히 담아낼것이며, 배경이 되어줄 것이다.

 

 목적없이 걷기

 성곽을 상징하는 선형 매스의 지붕은 지표면 레벨에서 하나의 길 된다. 방문객들은 현대 도시의 일상에서의 속도, 효율성, 채움의 행위들에서 잠시 떠나, 성곽을 따라 비움, 여유, 목적없이 걷기, 돌아가기 등 느림의 행위를 경험한다. 이것은 성곽 밟기를 상징하기도 한다. 성곽밟기를 하는 방문객들이 만들어내는 풍경은 시민과 여행객들에게 옛 도시를 기억하게 하는 오브제의 역할을 하게 될 것이다.

 

 시선

 성곽을 상징하는 길을 따라, 벤치가 광장을 향하도록 연속적으로 설치되어 있다.  바쁜 도시에서 항상 나를 향해있는 시선을 벗어나, 다른 것을 바라보게 함으로서 도심에서의 여유와 휴식을 유도한다.

 

 신연자루

 신연자루는 광장과 프로그램이 모두 지표하에 배치됨으로, 더욱 강력한 인지성을 가진다. 유일하게 지표면 위로 돌출된 매스이기 때문이다. 광장과 도시, 옥천 등의 조망의 개방감도 극대화될 수 있을것이다. 방문객은 광장에서 Site C의 하부 연결통로를 지나며, 신연자루로 진입한다. 전통건축의 누하진입을 연상할 수도 있을 것이다. 광장에서 옥천으로 이어지는 하나의 관문으로서의 장소로 인지되어지기를 희망한다.

 

Program

Plaza

*Urban lobby

 이 거대한 비움의 공간은 순천을 방문하는 사람들에게 하나의 로비와 같은 공간이다. 또한, 담고 있는 각각의 기능들의 앞마당이기도 하다. 순천의 모든 목적지의 출발점이자 종착점이 되기에 충분한 문화, 역사적 컨텐츠를 공유할 수 있다.

 선형적으로 배치된 각각의 프로그램들은 광장을 둘러싸며, 광장을 향해 열려있다. 방문자센터 라운지에서의 휴식은 언제든 광장으로 이어질 수 있으며, 미술관의 전시기능은 광장을 통해 야외전시에서 내부전시로 연결된다. 다목적 강당 역시 무대를 중심으로 광장을 향해 확장될 수 있도록, 내 외부의 객석을 마주보게 배치했다.

 광장은 세개의 level로 이어져 있다. 기존의 지표레벨(±0 level) 도심의 네트워크와 지하 상권(-8.0 level)의 네트워크를 수직적으로 연결한다.  

다양한 컨텍스트를 담아, 도심을 향해 수직, 수평으로 열려있는 Urban lobby 인 것이다.  

*세개의 레벨

 비워진 광장(±0 level) : 지표레벨에서의 거대한 비움의 공간은 낮아진 광장안의 다양한

                                행위들을 상상하게 하며, 끌어당기는 힘을 가진다.

 기억의 광장(-4.5M level) : 옛도심의 성곽 안으로 들어오는 하늘과 산을 품고, 기억하는

 문화의 광장(-8.0M level) : 미술관의 전시기능과 공연 등의 문화적 컨텐츠의 교류

 

Art Center

*Holoscopic view : 대부분의 미술관이 작품으로의 시선을 중시하는 내부 전시공간(black box)을 가진다면, 순천예술광장의 전시공간에서는 순천이라는 도시 자체를 바라보는 시선(holoscopic view)을 추가한다. 광장과, 그것이 낮아짐으로 인해 형성된 입면, 광장을 바라보고 있는 사람, 구도심의 건물들 그리고 이 모든것의 정점이 되어 서있는 산들은 전시공간으로 들어와 순천이라는 또 하나의 거대한 상설 전시를 보여준다. 

 

Visitor Center

방문자센터는 순천의 전경을 품은 기억의 광장(-4.5m)에 면하여 개방되어 있다. 순천을 소개하는 Urban lobby로서의 광장과 가장 밀접하게 연결된다.

 방문자센터에 인접해 자전거대여소 프로그램을 제안했다. 기억의 광장을 출발해 site C 하부의 그늘공간을 지나, 옥천으로 접근한다. 여행객들에게 순천만까지의 자전거 여행은 매우 유쾌할 것이다.

New Yeonja-Ru & Cafeteria

 광장과 기타의 프로그램이 모두 지표하에 배치됨으로, 신연자루는 더욱 강력한 인지성을 가진다. 유일하게 지표면 위로 돌출된 매스이기 때문이다. 광장과 도시, 옥천 등의 조망을 위한 개방감도 극대화될 수 있을것이다. 방문객은 광장에서 Site C의 하부 연결통로를 지나며, 신연자루로 진입한다. 전통건축의 누하진입을 연상할 수도 있을 것이다. 신연자루가 광장에서 옥천으로 이어지는 하나의 관문으로서의 장소로 인지되어지기를 희망한다. 

 

Parking

주차장은 세개의 레벨마다 위치하여, 각각의 프로그램에 직접적으로 연결된다. 미술관 서비스차량의 주차 및 하역공간은 방문객 주차와 영역을 분리하여, 작품 반출입의 보안성을 높혔다. 또한, 주차장 지하 2층에서는 기존 지하상가로의 진입 동선도 고려하여, 연결이 가능하도록 계획했다.

Reverse Addition

​

 Rapidly industrialized city have been expanded vertically, horizontally not considering urban proper density. This urbanization included both Adding on the ground and cutting for new adding. Existing history, culture, ecological value have been discarded for higher density of city. Eventually, these two activities are just tools functioning for not urban development but physical-oriented urban extension.

 

 City of Sun-cheon was also deemed to go through same urbanization. ( High-density housing complex : + , Extinction of Existing ecological environment: -,Demolition of Sun-cheon Fortress, Historic-cultural relics ). Under this situation, An identity of Sun-cheon has been extinguished in the outcome of building new urban center being created for high-rise housing complex.   

 

 For this competition, My approach begin how to re-define these reversal two activities as new positive urban design factors for co-existence of earth, city and humans. These new relationship show recover of disconnect between architecture and city. New urban square revitalizing urban network, Art center disseminating contents of historic-cultural contents should be proposed for this site. Especially, This facility induce/provoke cultural activities and communion between citizen and visitors and should be in charge of symbolic objet containing urban identity

 Now Sun-cheon are starting look for urban beings to be lost and to recover. Diverse cultural resources are being excavated and used for intensifying urban identity. These efforts make an progressive achievement. As a part of these movement,  I propose “Reverse Addition” as new Sun-cheon Art Platform

 Being empty

 The best way to disclose the existence of square is empting out on the ground. This grand void makes spatial contact effectively, frequently between square and old urban center’s network. Spatial contact by grand void enables citizen from old-urban center and visitors to experience cultural interaction and to promote revitalization of fashion streets. Being widen Gap between buildings by emptying on the ground connect visually citizen with long-distance ecological environment. This experience provides perception of identity for citizens and visitors. For this we arrange square and suggested program excluding New Yeonja-Ru below the level of ground

* Lowered square and rearrangement of border

 Border made by merely vacating just is surrounded by existing buildings in urban center building. New programs such as exhibition, education facility and visitor center are arranged on the border of section generated by lowering square below the ground. Outline shape of square border is designed to make people recall old fortress in Sun-cheon. Previous old urban center inside the fortress are represented as square enclosed by new context. Present of Sun-cheon and mountains, sky having been existed for long time meet people’s eye in lowered square.

 

* Wall

Wall under the ground being created by lowered square will stand silently as a background embracing a variety of cultural activities.

 

* Driftlessly walk

Linear-shape roof symbolizing fortress becomes road on the level ground. Visitors can enjoy slowness along this road such as driftlessly walk, detour, composure being off the urban daily life style valuing on the speed, efficiency and so on. This activities is a reproduction of traditional festival, “Seong Kwak Bal Gi”. Scenery of “Seong Kwak Bal Gi” play a symbolic objet to make citizen and visitors recollect old city.

 

* Gaze

Bench toward square is arranged along the road symbolizing fortress. Sitting bench make people’s eyesight be extroverted from ego-centric gaze in hasty urban daily life. Through this change people can have a composure to assimilate with nature and their artificial environment.

Art Platform

 

* Urban lobby

This is a huge emptiness of space like the lobby welcoming people who live and visit Sun-cheon. And it also function as a front yard of arranged programs in this art platform. This can be both starting point and destinations to share cultural and historical content of Sun-cheon. Each program being arranged Linearly is open to the square and simultaneously enclose the square. People in visitor center can move any time to the square lounge. In-door and out-door exhibition in museum have a functional connectivity through the square. And the inside and the outside of the seats in multi-purpose auditorium is disposed to look each other in the border of stage. It make it possible to extend the boundary of auditorium toward square. Square is comprised of three levels being connected continuously. These levels connect vertically between the network of the existing ground level(±0 level) and the city’s underground network of commercial facilities(-8.0 level). This Square is Urban Lobby which is open towards the city center horizontally and vertically with containing a variety of contexts.

 

* Three levels

Square evacuated (±0 level) : Embellished empty space in the ground level has the

                                                power to pull and drag to imagine a variety of events.

Square of memory (-4.5M level) : Remember that having a square incoming sky and

                                                     mountains in the castle of the old city center.

Square of culture (-8.0 M level) : Exchange of cultural contents such as exhibitions and

                                                     performances in art galleries.

 

 

Art Center

 

* Holoscopic view 

While most of the museum has in-door exhibition space(black box) functioning by works-oriented introverted eyesight, Exhibition space in Sun-cheon art plaza is functioned by extroverted eyesight, holoscopic view overlooking the city Sun-cheon itself. Square, Elevation formed by lowering square, People looking at the square, Buildings of the old city and Mountains standing as a peak are came into the exhibition space in square and become an artifice, Sun-cheon itself. Living picture of Sun-cheon is exhibited in this platform permanently.

 

 

Visitor Center

Visitor center embracing the views of Sun-cheon is open to face the plaza of memory (-4.5m level). It is most closely associated with the square as the ‘Urban Lobby’ introducing Sun-cheon. We propose the bike rental program in association with visitor center. Journey of bike starts from the square of memory and extend to the Ok-Cheon riverbank by passing a shade below the site C. Bike tour from site to Suncheon Bay will provide very pleasant experience for visitors

 

 

New Yeonja-Ru & Cafeteria

By Squrae and other programs being placed below the ground, Reversely New Yeonja-Ru can be perceived more strongly. Because it is the only protruded mass from the ground. And Openness for panorama such as the square, the city and Ok-Cheon riverbank will also be maximized. Visitors will enter into the New Yeonja-Ru by passing connecting passage below the Site C in the square. It may make people evoke the entrance type of passing below the roof seen in korean traditional architectural style. We hope that the New Yeonja-Ru is recognized as a leading gateway from square to the Ok-Cheon riverbank.

 

Parking

Parking lot located in three-levels is directly connected to each program. Additionally the security for the in&out of works can be ensured by separating parking area of service vehicle and, cargo handling area from visitor’s parking area.
